It was a manuscript containing 53 stories, some written out in detail, others sketched in brief outline form. In December 1810 they submitted this collection to Clemens Brentano and Achim von Arnim for inclusion in a planned third volume to their successful collection of folk poetry entitled Des Knaben Wunderhorn (The Boy's Magic Horn, 3 volumes, 1806, 1808, 1808), which was to be dedicated to folktales.

Hou uses a retrospective and reflective attitude in making this movie, scripting this historical incident to happen to a normal family, so that the story can be dealt with more rationally. On the other hand, he purposely posed Wenqing, the protagonist in the movie, as a mute. The protagonist being a mute seems to bring about a great restriction to the development of the story, but from another point of view, it actually maximizes the artistic potential of the movie. Visual footages were being presented continuously, and with the various incomplete images being pieced up gradually, it presents Wenqing's world to the viewers in an even clearer light.

Children asked questions out of curiosity and therefore their inquiry is used to provide suggestion, offer doubts, lead for discussion, and ask for supports. Secondly, in the beginning reading period, children use illustration and give impromptus performance to guess and predict the plot of story. During the discussion period, children respond in six ways. Children ask more questions on the previous problems. The reading texts are used as basis for clarification and rational explanation for unreasonable points. Children's reading experience, their life experience, and self-creative stories are used to provide detailed explanation on contracted and unclear reading texts. Thirdly, children's response on reading can be divided into two types: concrete and abstract. Concrete responses include practical suggestion, illustration imagination, and plot deduction. Abstract responses include discussing characters' feelings, conversing about imagination outside the texts, and exploring and metaphors.
