THE saga of the construction of the Pentagon, skilfully recounted by Steve Vogel, a military reporter on the Washington Post, is as enthralling as it is improbable. One Thursday evening, July 17th 1941, Brigadier-General Brehon Somervell, on his own initiative, assembled a small group of officers from the army's construction division.
