At every turn Chiang emphasized the word "loyalty." His soldiers' undershirts were stamped with the character for loyalty. His army officers rose and fell on the basis of their loyalty. His ministers were hired and fired on the degree of their loyalty. Citizens were adjured to be loyal to their ancestors, to the state, to the Chinese way of life.
