The radical scavenging activity of Laminaria japonica pigments was studied by the DPPH2,2-Diphenyl~(-1-picrylhydrazylassay. The total pigments showed a strong DPPH radical scavenging activity of 65.819% with the concentration of 0.52mg.ml~(-1). The DPPH radical scavenging activity of fucoxanthin was 19.85% with the concentration of 0.27mg.ml~(-1). The antimicrobial activity of pigment in Laminaria japonica was studied by the method of round paper. The results showed that the pigment extracts have activity against Escherichia coli, Pseudomonas aeruginosa, Saricina flava and Saccharomyes cerevisia. The antibacterial activity of total pigments for Saccharomyes cerevisia was the strongest with an inhibition diameter of 18.9 mm; and the antibacterial activity of fucoxanthin for Saricina flava was also much significant with an inhibition diameter of 10.2 mm.

Polyphenol compounds were extracted from the sorghum groats by water and methanol. Total phenolic content, reducing power, chelating activity, DPPH radical scavenging activity, ABTS radical cation scavenging activity and inhibition of hydroxyl radical-mediated 2-deoxy-D-ribose degradation of the extracts from the sorghum groats were determined.

The main results are as follows.1. The UV-visible absorption spectra, the spin-trapping EPR measurements, and the DPA (9,10-diphenylanthracene) bleaching experiments showed that (1) HB-Net exhibits much improved light harvesting efficiency in the phototherapeutic window (600-900 nm) as the result of its remarkable absorption red shift with respect to HB;(2) HB-Net remains the generation abilities of semiquinone anion radical, superoxide anion radical, hydroxyl radical, and singlet oxygen, but with much lower efficiencies than that of HB, most likely due to its very short triplet excited state lifetime.

A study of Chemically Induced Dynamic Poiarization spectra is made, using a highly time resolved ESR, of photolized anthracenequinone radicals to determine the influence of surfactant micelles on the spin polarization of anthracenequinone anion. It is found that the CIDEP mechanism of photolization is mainly the radical pair mechanism of anthracenesemiquinone radical and of ethylene glycol ketyl R〓〓 or R〓 radical whose center is carbon in anthracenequinone/ethylene glycol system, but there is a certain amount of triplet state mechanism polarization.

The tryptophan residues play important roles in DNA photoreactivation catalyzed by CPD photolyases. We have investigated the action mechanism concerning Trp in DNA photoreactivation, and obtained the results as follows: 1 We proposed a mechanism of photosensitized splitting of CPDs by Trp and Trp-containing peptides. 2 Quantum yields of splitting of the model compounds that a Trp linked covalently a CPD were obtained under 290 nm light in various solvents, these values changing with solvent, range from 0.01 to 0.5. 3 Utilizing pulse radiolysis technique, splitting processes were observed in aqueous solution of the CPDs with hydrated electron and some oxidative species (such as hydroxyl radical, bromic radical and azide radical), and obtained their rate constants. In the case of interaction between CPD and hydrated electron, splitting of the CPD anion, and pyrimidine anion transfer an electron to FAD or Rf, were observed. The process rate was slower one order more than that in photolyase. Minor, but highly mutagenic UV-light-induced lesions are (6-4) photoproducts, which are repaired by (6-4) photolyases. These enzymes, discovered in 1993, are not well characterized and their mechanism is still under investigation.
