As I mentioned earlier, the yearend prices of our major investees were much higher relative to their intrinsic values than theretofore. While those prices may not yet cause nosebleeds, they are clearly vulnerable to a general market decline. A drop in their prices would not disturb us at all - it might in fact work to our eventual benefit - but it would cause at least a one-year reduction in Berkshire's net worth. We think such a reduction is almost certain in at least one of the next three years.

At Berkshire, wanting our fees to be meaningless to our directors, we pay them only a pittance. Additionally, not wanting to insulate our directors from any corporate disaster we might have, we don't provide them with officers' and directors' liability insurance (an unorthodoxy that, not so incidentally, has saved our shareholders many millions of dollars over the years). Basically, we want the behavior of our directors to be driven by the effect their decisions will have on their family'snet worth, not by their compensation. That's the equation for Charlie and me as managers, and we think it's the right one for Berkshire directors as well.

It is an ancient species in its own genus and well-adapted to drought environments with fissurate growth and summer dormancy. Methods We selected Dengkou as our research site and collected three stages of P. mongolica (before, during and after fissuration) during August 1-5, 2002 and 2003. We used PV technique and measured several water relations parameters (φ,φ, ROWC, RWC,△(subscript φ),ε etc. in different stages of fissurate growth for comparison and analysis of drought tolerance and its mechanisms. Important findings Different stages of P. mongolica had different abilities and pathways to maintain turgor pressure. Fissurate growth decreased the species' drought tolerance and involved multiple adaptations to drought.

选取内蒙古磴口县境内具有绵刺群落的草原化荒漠区为研究样区，于2002~2003年每年8月1~5日采集未劈裂、正在劈裂和已劈裂植株，运用PV技术对不同劈裂生长状态绵刺的多种水分关系参数φ(下标 s、φ、ROWC、RWC、△、ε进行了测定，从绵刺保持膨压的能力和途径两方面进行了深入探讨；同时结合同一项目研究中绵刺劈裂生长过程中抗氧化酶系统和内源激素方面的研究成果，综合分析并探讨了绵刺劈裂生长的发生机理及其环境适应性。

In a meeting held at Harbin 1959, discussing the possible over-winter sites of theOriental armyworm, Leucania separata Walker, in the Northeast, a hypothesis was pro-posed (Chang, 1959) that this insect most probably did not over-winter in the Northeast,but the outbreak every spring was due to mass migration of the adult moths along withthe south or southwest trade winds.

Stage I of both male and female stone flounder appears only once in all its life, and the germ cells are comprised by spermatogonia or oogonia. The gonad from Mar to Aug keeps at stage II. The gonad index of testis at this stage is 0.037%, and the amount of spermatogonia is increased quickly. There is some linear germ plasm in the cytoplasm of spermatogina. In ovary at this stage it is mostly composed by oocyte of phase 2 which the character is the appearance of yolk nucleus, and no zona radiate in membrane. The mean GI of ovary is 1.95%. From Sep to Oct gonad is at stage III which testis is composed by lots of spermatogina and few spermatocytes, and the mean GI of testis at this stage is 0.086%. In ovary the ooctyes at phase 3 are in dominate position, the yolk nucleus disappear. And the GI of this stage is 3.35%. Both testis and ovary are at stage IV in Nov. hi testis the germ cells are in spermiogenesis, and the mean GI is 0.93%. hi ovary the oocytes are mostly at phase 4, which are filled in the cytoplasm with vitellin granule, and the zona radiate in membrane begins to formation. Nucleus moves to one side of the oocyte gradually. The mean GI of ovary at this stage is 9.37%.

The results show:① The predominant period bands represented in the lowfrequency fluctuation field are interseasonal fluctuations of 6 pentads (30 days) and 10 pentads (50 days) and the intraseasonal fluctuations of 15 to 17 pentads (75 to 85 days).② The 30day fluctuation period is an intrinsic fluctuation of the pentad precipitation in rainy season of Yunnan Province.③ When El Nino or La Nina happens, there is a 50day fluctuation period in the pentad precipitation in rainy season of Yunnan.④ While there is a 75-85 day fluctuation period in the pentad precipitation in rainy season of Yunnan, the precipitation anomaly percentage in the main flood period in Yunnan is positive; on the contrary, while there is no 75-85 day fluctuation, the precipitation anomaly percentage is negative.

结果表明：①云南地区雨季降水主要低频振荡周期为6候(30天)，10候(50天)的月际振荡和15～17候(75～85天)的季节内振荡；②云南雨季的候降水每年都存在30天振荡周期，30天振荡是云南雨季固有的振荡；③当发生El Nino或La Nina异常气候事件时，云南雨季的候降水存在50天振荡周期；④当云南雨季存在75～85天振荡时，云南主汛期(6～8月)降水距平百分率为正(除2000年为零距平)；当云南雨季不存在75～85天振荡时，云南主汛期降水距平百分率为负。

The results obtained revealed that:(1) the Pacific yellowfin has larger ring-radii as well as scale size than the Indian Yellowfin;(2) the specimens from the western Indian have larger value in scale size and ring-radii than those from eastern Indian;(3) there is a significant difference in the estimated growth curves between male and female for the Pacific specimens, but not for the Indian specimens; and (4) it is convinced that there are two yellowfin groups in the Indian Ocean, viz., one concentrates in the western Indian and the other densely distributes in the waters around Sunda Islands and Banda Sea; intermingling of these two groups is supposed to be occurred around 100°E in the season of northern summer.
