ET tube insertion procedures were performed on 59 pediatric patients aged newborn to 17 years (33 boys) due to cardiopulmonary arrest or impending respiratory failure. Ultrasound images were taken before and after the procedure in two-dimensional and time-sector modes using a portable ultrasonic machine. The subxiphoid window at the mid-upper abdominal — just beneath the xiphoid process and the lower margin of the liver — was used most often, with a wide transducer sector angle (90 degrees) for bilateral scanning of the diaphragm.
