Chinook Jargon, a pidgin language once widely spoken along the Pacific coast from Oregon to Alaska, made notable contributions to the English language, including one of the oddest terms we have for a person of importance, high muckamuck (1853), a perhaps deliberate mistranslation of a phrase that originally meant "lots of food." But one word that does not come from Chinook Jargon or the Penutian Indian language of the Chinook peoples is the name Chinook itself.
