The continual expansion of sand dike outside the shore and sandspit of the Yangtze River and Huaihe River, in addition to siltation of the Yangtze River and Huaihe River, caused Sheyang Lake to change gradually from semi-seal to whole-seal.

Based on systematic analysis of various desilting methods by using existing reservoirs, the paper puts forward an overall thinking of desilting system of auto-suction pipe of the Xiaolangdi Reservoir, i.e. to automatically discharge the deposited fine sands within about 40 km area in foreside of the dam through dam tunnel or tunnel on the right bank of mountain by placing a removable and lengthable pipe equipped with a suction head in the near dam section of the reservoir area.It can discharge 300 million tons sediment each year by preliminary estimation.
