Starting in the fall of 1952, the Navy's Cherokee strikes together with a series of Air Force "air-pressure" strikes resulted in intense US Air Force-US Navy BAI operations that did much to hamper Communist tactical mobility and eliminate the supplies that North Korean and Chinese Communist forces had been able to accumulate behind the front.

After a long period of preparation, Manstein finally decided he could take major action again.
