This paper analyzes the employment characteristics of vague language in English business correspondence, and proposes that vague language has a certain kind of indictive function, that is, its employment frequency represents different kinds of business correspondence. It is concluded, through the analysis of the reason, that vague language serves as ostensive stimulus which can he used to make the addresser intention understood by the addressee.
