因为雨林中植物生长极为迅速,而死去植物和动物的遗骸提供的养分(nutrient)消耗很多,以致雨林的土壤出奇的贫瘠. 因此,玛雅人发展出"火耕"(slash and burn agriculture)的方式:先砍伐土地上的植物,再放火焚烧,灰烬可使土壤变得比较肥沃(fertile).
