"荒漠化"(desertification)一词是1949年法国科学家奥布里维尔提出来的,当时他把热带雨林在人为影响下变成稀疏草原,乃至荒漠景观的过程称为荒漠化. 1977年联合国在肯尼亚首都内罗毕召开的世界防治荒漠化会议上首次被正式使用了"荒漠化"这个词.
