In 1858, in order to unite Italy, King Victor Emmanuel II formed an alliance with Emperor Napoleon III of France against Austrian Emperor Franz Joseph, who occupied Venetia and Lombardy. The Franco-Sardinian alliance won the battle of Solferino, in which 40,000 soldiers were killed or wounded, on 24 June 1859. Napoleon III and Franz Joseph signed an armistice in July.
