gramicidin：短杆菌
另外两个早期发现的抗生素是短杆菌(gramicidin)和短杆菌酪(tyrocidin),都是杆菌属细菌制造的. 1939年迪博(Rene Dubos)发现这两种抗生素,发现它们对表面感染有效,但毒性大不宜内用. 另外较晚分离出的抗生素有头孢霉素(cephalosporin).
